The sculptures in this series evolve from a particular process. I fill nylon stockings with vermiculite and mound several of these small, malleable “pillows” on a board. Then I drape a slab of clay over the pillows and drop the board. When the board hits the ground, the clay clutches the pillows creating an undulating shape. As the slab dries, I manipulate it into various shapes and modify it by adding elements until “unknown beings,” involving both exterior and interior forms, emerge.
