The pieces in my ENTRANCES/CHAMBERS series invite the mind to enter through the small entrance in each form and sense the shape of the chamber inside. There is a relationship between that series and this, my INTERIOR/EXTERIOR series, which makes visible both the exterior and interior forms of the sculpture.|
My sculptures in this series evolve from a particular process. I fill nylon stockings with vermiculite and mound several of these small, malleable "pillows" on a board. Then I drape a slab of clay over the pillows and drop the board. When the board hits the ground, the clay clutches the pillows creating an undulating shape. As the slab dries, I manipulate it into various shapes and modify it by adding elements until "unknown beings," involving both exterior and interior forms, emerge.
